One of the most important aspects of creating a Hamptons home is finding the perfect interiors. From the classic blue-and-white colour scheme to coastal décor and shaker-style kitchens, there are many things you can do to evoke that unmistakable Hamptons feel.

We are very lucky to have her as part of the Hampton Homes dream team and here, Natalee reveals her top tips for creating your dream Hamptons home.

What is Hamptons styling?

When creating a Hamptons home, we love to bring our clients’ own style into play. I always explain there are many styles that fall under the Hamptons category; traditional and classic American, modern minimalistic, casual coastal, tropical British Colonial, and, of course, the Australian take. The beauty of it is, you can include some or all of these elements to create a style that is uniquely you.

Why do you think it’s so popular?

It’s all about the gorgeous lifestyle it offers and the atmosphere it creates. Right now, the Hamptons style is an unstoppable force in exterior and interior design in Australia. It’s on the hit list of every major retailer and builder, with consumers referencing the look above any other. A Hamptons home gives you the feeling of being on holiday, all day, every day. That relaxed, calm atmosphere is so sought after in our busy lives.

What are some of best textures to include?

Jute fabric gives a coastal look and grounds the space with natural textures and neutral tones. I love to layer a large jute rug with a blue-and-white-stripe rug one size smaller. Layered rugs add a homeliness to every space, a feeling of comfort. Linen upholstery is a must, with casual slipcover sofas and beautiful patterned linen fabrics for occasional chairs and cushions.

Many people build Hamptons homes by the sea in keeping with the classic New York holiday style. If you’re lucky enough to have a fantastic view, a double-storey home could help you maximise it. From sweeping views of the ocean to panoramic cityscapes, make the most of what you have by building up.

What are staple furnishings to include?

Gorgeous lighting is key in a Hamptons home. Chandeliers and beautiful pendants bring class and sophistication to every space. Roll arm sofas are a classic Hamptons look for living areas, and blue-and-white textiles create interest and depth. Another key piece is art. Whether it be blooming hydrangeas, coral and sea creatures or lovely green foliage prints, your wall art should communicate your personality and interests.

How important is layering?

From natural linens to jute rugs and timber accents, layering is vital to the aesthetic. Blue-and-white cushions, and pops of black and white will bring depth to the space. Floorboards should always be American oak or stained chocolate. Finish the look with greenery, such as orchids and palms.

What would you say to someone considering a Hamptons-style home?

entertaining? How long are you intending to stay in the house? Answering these questions can help you decide whether to renovate or rebuild – or both. Either way, I would suggest investing in a few key furniture pieces, such as a linen lounge and several cane chairs, paired with a jute rug. These items can then be complemented with cushions in blue and white; the perfect, inexpensive way to create a laidback, seaside feel. You can enhance your new furniture purchases with some lush indoor greenery and soft textiles. Add a few oversized pot plants and palms, as this will create the perfect holiday-at-home look and add vibrant colour to a neutral palette.

You could also consider redesigning the layout of your houses to incorporate open-plan living, as well as creating an outdoor entertaining space. Hamptons homes are designed to make the most of warm days and alfresco entertaining, which is ideally suited to the Australian lifestyle. Oversized bifold doors that open onto a balcony, deck, pool area or grassy backyard will encourage a seamless transition between your lounge room and dining space, not to mention opening up your living area to expand your entertaining space.
